Event information

This event is sold out.

Leichhardt Rowing Club is offering a rowing program for 12 -13 year old boys and girls at the LRC Rowing Academy. The Academy was set-up exclusively for this particular age group so that the participants have appropriate and structured training relative to their age.

It offers a sport that has tremendous physical benefits which is non-impact and is relatively injury free. It is the ultimate team sport and develops, discipline, commitment, responsibility, self-sacrifice, cooperation and tolerance where teamwork is of the essence. Paramount in the program is to teach body posture along with the fundamentals of rowing in a fun and supportive environment. Some participants will utilise the academy to put themselves in a greater position when school rowing begins in Term 3 of Year 7. All Academy students from rowing or non-rowing schools will be offered to join the junior rowing program at Leichhardt Rowing Club at the conclusion of the academy. It is also a goal to create a club relationship with all the Academy athletes and their parents.

The Academy wants to help impart quality of life and sporting excellence where the equipment and facility is state of the art. The facility/boatshed is located on the Iron Cove Bay at the northern end of Glover St Leichhardt. All coaches are appropriately qualified and the Academy is envisaging to have the program run in the next school holidays (Dec-21 to Jan-22). It will consist of one session per week approximately 1.5 hrs minimum. However it may be extended to two sessions per week depending on numbers. At the conclusion of the school holidays and to maintain continuity in skill development the Academy will be doing one session weekly on Sundays. The sessions are offered then to help students who have sporting commitments on Saturdays. The continued development will lead up to an opportunity for their first race in the winter rowing regattas known as the “J B Sharpe Regatta” series which are held on the Iron Cove Bay.

All students must pass a water safety test at the local pool under the direction of the LRC coaches to comply with the club’s safety protocols.

The cost of the program is $250 and the first session will commence on Sunday 12th December at 10.30am for orientation at the LRC clubhouse. During the school holidays, sessions will be held on weekday mornings from 8 - 9.30am. Once numbers are finalized, session days will be determined.
