History Leichhardt Rowing Club was established in 1886. The first clubhouse was opened by Sir Henry Parkes in 1887. The club has been a part of rowing in Sydney since that time and we have had many notable achievements including:
represented in the winning A.I.F. crew, Henley, England, leading to the establishment of the Kings Cup for the Australian Championship State Eight Oared Crew
Australian representatives at Olympic and World Championship level over many years
Strong competition in the New South Wales Rowing Association club competitions, including the Premiership which we won in 1988, 2007, 2009 and 2010, winning the Trickett Regatta 2010,
Club of The Year - Achievement Award from Rowing Australia 2002.
Leichhardt has been proud to host the top girls school rowers in Sydney in Pymble Ladies' College, as well as young athletes from neighbouring schools. We now have over two hundred members: schools, junior and novice rowers, intermediate and seniors, and a strong masters group. We have also had many top rowers from many schools from the local area who have had many successes at State and National level. We encourage students from all schools to join the club.
Our recent successes include 2 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze at the 2010 national titles, and three of the four rowers who represented LRC also represented NSW at the Interstate regatta.
The new pontoon Over three long years, LRC luminaries worked hard to develop a new pontoon that has set the standard for pontoons in Sydney. The previous pontoonhad served us well but was proving to be too small for the demands made on it and it was evident that repairs were son due, so the club together (Richard Stanistreet, Wade Hewett and Charles Bartlett in particular) with Pymble Ladies College determined to build the biggest and best. And we did - see it here in all its glory, and share the stop/start installation too on the pontoon updates page where you will find links to the photos of the action. The new pontoon was officially opened on 30 May 2010.
The Clubhouse The architect-designed clubhouse is a concrete structure and was completed in January 2002. It was officially opened by the NSW Attorney General at the Club’s annual regatta on the 9 February 2002. Old Clubhouse was demolished during the latter part of 2001. Features of the new structure include the movement of all facilities to the upper floor, which includes a magnificent carpeted reception area and gymnasium facility. The expansive verandah provides an excellent viewing and entertainment area and the upper floor provides an ideal venue for daytime or evening functions (available for hire).
