What is the Learn to Row program? The Learn to Row program is an introduction to rowing that allows a wide range of the community to participate.
Each
program consists of an ‘Information and registration’ session, then 6 x
2 hour sessions. The info and rego session allows us to explain some of
the details of the program, answer any queries and get the paperwork
done. Your first session is land-based. It will include coaching on
rowing simulators, plus an introduction to boat handling and rowing
terminology. The next 5 sessions are all on water and are designed to
give all participants a basic understanding of crew rowing.
Juniors
(under 16) generally learn in sculling boats (2 oars per rower) while
senior/adult rowers learn in sweep oar (1 oar per rower) boats.
What happens after I’ve completed the Learn to Row program? At
the conclusion of the course, various programs are available to further
your rowing experience. Our programs include junior and youth
development programs for future elite aspirants, adult social rowing
and recreational racing programs. Participants who are willing
and are considered to have the ability to progress to racing crews will
be invited by the club to join its racing program. Other participants
can join the social rowing program. See other sections of the website
for information on these programs.
Who can participate? As
rowing is a demanding sport - both physically and mentally - it is
necessary to place entry restrictions on participants. All applicants
must be healthy and fit as well as being capable swimmers. Also, we
place the following minimums on juniors applying for the program: • Minimum age is 13 years • Minimum weight for girls is 45kg • Minimum weight for boys is 50 kg
While
we endeavour to accept all applicants into the program, the club
reserves the right to refuse entry such as when participation in the
program may have adverse health repercussions for the applicant.
How much? Cost for participation in the program (incl GST) is $125 for school students and $250 for adults.
When is it? We run two LTR programs each year, usually in April and September. Keep an eye on the LRC website to see the dates of the next LTR, and for when registrations are open.
