Learn to row

The goal of the program is to introduce and allow a wide range of the community to participate in the sport of rowing.
We welcome your enquiries but we do not take bookings or pre-registration (all registration happens on the registration morning). The dates for the next course are likely to be announced in September, so keep an eye on the website.
The next Learn to Row will be later in the year around October. LRC usually runs two Learn to Row programs a year, in April/May and October/November, but the dates vary according to regatta commitments.

What can I expect?
Each program consists of a Registration and information session, then 6 x 2 hour sessions. The
Registration and information session allows us to explain some of the details of the program, answer any queries and get the paperwork done.
Your first session is land-based. It will include coaching on rowing simulators, plus an introduction to boat handling and rowing terminology.
If you miss the land-based session, you will not be able to continue with the program.
The next five sessions are all on water and are designed to give all participants a basic understanding of crew rowing.
Juniors (under 16) generally learn in sculling boats (two oars per rower) while senior/adult rowers learn in sweep oar (one oar per rower) boats.

What happens after I’ve completed the Learn to Row program?
At the conclusion of the program:

  • Junior participants who are willing and able to row in squad training (weekend mornings) are invited by the club to join the junior program.
  • Adult participants are able to join the social rowing program (Sunday morning rowing).
  • The Club Captain may invite adult participants who are considered to have a suitable racing profile and the ability, to progress into the racing program. Going into this program requires serious commitment to the early morning weekday training and the program for selection for competition. See here for information on the requirements for these programs.
Who can participate?
As rowing is a demanding sport – both physically and mentally - it is necessary to place entry restrictions on participants. All applicants must be healthy and fit as well as being capable swimmers. Also, we place the following minimums on juniors applying for the program:
•       Minimum age is 13 years
•       Minimum weight for girls is 45kg
•       Minimum weight for boys is 50 kg
While we endeavour to accept all applicants into the program, the club reserves the right to refuse entry such as where participation in the program may have adverse health repercussions for the applicant.
